Heartbreaking: Acid Attacks In London Increase 200%

Jack Shearing (3/18/2017)

Over 80% of victims of acid attacks are women. This is because the perpetrators intend to maim their victims for life and purposely wish to deprive them of their physical beauty. For this reason, I personally believe acid attacks to be one of the most despicable crime a human being can commit.

You can imagine my surprise when I read this startling statistic from Yahoo News: “1,500 acid attacks have been recorded in London since 2011.” Below are statistics that shows how many acid attacks occurred in the past six years in the different neighborhoods of London.

44 in Barnet, 64 in Redbridge, 398 in Newham… All these poor women. In 2015 there 261 acid attacks, some committed against little children in the arms of their mothers. Other attacks committed by little children with boiling acids or bases poured into water guns as instructed by their parents or destructive cultures to repay “dishonor.” Highly basic substances such as Lye (which is available for purchase in most hardware stores and supermarkets), can produce similar results as highly acidic compounds. Below is the victim of a Lye attack 2016 however, saw the number of attacks increase by 170. That’s almost a 200% increase.

Remember these statistics only represent one city: London. Acid attacks happen daily all over the world, including other western metropolises and countries although they are most prevalent in second and third world countries like Pakistan, India, Cambodia, Bangladesh and most countries with high Muslim populations. The New York Times reports that “Acid attacks in Pakistan are at an all-time high and increasing every year.”

I urge our readers all over the world to stay safe and watch out for the danger hiding out behind every corner. We may think we live in the safest, happiest and most prosperous period of human history but we are still mortal humans born from the womb of nature. And to quote the great poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, “Nature is red in tooth and claw.”
